DON'T RISK 2ND RATE SAFETY

Everyone has the right to go to work and come home safely.

By the 18th December this year the Federal, State and Territory governments are proposing to sign off on an agreed model OHS law for the whole country.

OHS in the workplace is a ‘bread and butter’ issue for trade unions and working people in general. We cannot allow this issue to be handled solely by the politicians.

The Facts

  • Every year it is estimated that 8,000 Australians die from a work-related injury or illness - more than four times the annual road toll.
  • In the next year, around one in every fifteen Australian workers will suffer a work-related injury or disease with 200,000 people affected seriously enough to take fiver or more days off work.
  • Every 2-3 minutes someone will be injured seriously enough to lodge a workers' compensation claim.
  • The Australian economy suffers to the tune of nearly $60 billion or 5.9% of GTP a year. Half this cost is borne by workers and their families and the remaining half by the community.

The new workplace health and safety laws that the Governments are proposing could put workers at risk. Unions say it is unacceptable for the changes to reduce red tape for business at the expense of workers’ safety.

Australian unions have launched the 'Don't Risk Second Rate Safety' campaign to achieve the world’s best safety standards by lifting rights and protections.

Dr. Darryn Snell and Allison Hart Monash University

The Gippsland Apprenticeship Research Project (GARP) arose from growing concern among a range of stakeholders (e.g. employers, trade unions, employment agencies, educators, group training providers, etc.) in the Gippsland region about apprentices/trainees and training schemes. The project reference group and funding sources included Monash University, Gippsland Local Government Network, Regional Development Victoria and Baw Baw Latrobe LLEN
.Stakeholder concerns included issues surrounding
* declining retention rates
* the quality of apprenticeships and traineeships
* employers’ motivation in taking on apprentices
* apprentice/trainee motivations for undertaking training.
