Construction workers campaign for equal rights

Construction workers in Australia have a different set of laws and rights than other Australians. They can be called before secret hearings of the government's enforcement agency the Australian Building and Construction Commissioner (the ABCC) and questioned about union meetings. They must answer all questions. If they do not attend or answer all questions they face harsh penalties, including six months imprisonment. They can be denied representation by the lawyer of their choice. Virtually all industrial action is illegal and can be punished by fines against individual workers and their union representatives.

Construction workers deserve the same rights as all workers

The five construction unions - the Australian Workers Union (AWU), the Australian Manufacturing Workers Union (AMWU), the CFMEU, the Electrical Trades Union (ETU), the Plumbing Trades Employees Union (PTEU), the State Trades Halls and the ACTU are all supporting the campaign.

Dr. Darryn Snell and Allison Hart Monash University

The Gippsland Apprenticeship Research Project (GARP) arose from growing concern among a range of stakeholders (e.g. employers, trade unions, employment agencies, educators, group training providers, etc.) in the Gippsland region about apprentices/trainees and training schemes. The project reference group and funding sources included Monash University, Gippsland Local Government Network, Regional Development Victoria and Baw Baw Latrobe LLEN
.Stakeholder concerns included issues surrounding
* declining retention rates
* the quality of apprenticeships and traineeships
* employers’ motivation in taking on apprentices
* apprentice/trainee motivations for undertaking training.
Occupational Health and Safety

A fundamental human right of every working person is to be able to return home at the end of the workday alive and healthy. Everyone deserves decent working conditions and to be treated with respect.

Victorian Unions Demand:

  • Weekly payments be increased
  • Injured workers be returned to their old jobs and have the right to chose who represents them
  • Stress injuries be treated the same as any other injury
  • disputes over claims be settled quickly through Conciliation and Arbitration
  • Impairment payments if 5% impaired
